Similarly to last year, I travelled to Cambridge to support the first year MArch students in protoype making. This year’s projects addressed the use and improvements to the standardised temporary school classrooms, house reconfigurations in Newham and updates to old stables by San Siro Stadium. Other schemes were aimed at protecting a street market in Aldershot and reinstating traditional building practices in Ghana.
Students challenged themselves with repairing a partially decayed pier in Scotland and designing on uneven and rocky terrain. The materials featured thatch from Norfolk, rocks from Orkney Islands (or locally found alternatives to match), clay and bricks, waste plastics. At the end of the workshop, the students established the key learnings, proposed the upcoming steps for their prototypes and supported each other with constructive comments. A Zoom session organised a week in advance helped to streamline the process on the day and ensure everyone was on the same page about the task.
