Fieldgate Street Apart Hotel

In 2023 I was part of the TP Bennett team working on an apart hotel proposal on Fieldgate Street – an site in Central London (Tower Hamlets), adjacent to Tower House, where Iosif Stalin used to stay cheaply during his visits to the London-hosted Bolshevik congresses in the early 1900s. Today, it is much costlier to stay in this area.

The scheme is a 10-storey apart hotel with 200 rooms, a commercial area at ground floor. The projecting windows facing Tower House are angled to accommodate privacy. These stacked projections posed a challenge in terms of resolving the narrow gaps in between: insuring the rooms are adequately insulated and the gaps can be accessed and maintained. A pre-fabricated solution was chosen at the end.

For this project I was preparing presentations and visualisations for planning submissions, and subsequently developing technical designs (in a team of 4), calling manufacturers to enquire about various bespoke details. For example, one of the challenges was to find a security-rated door that could have a fluting motif – shown in dark grey at ground floor.
