I spent a day with the NOW atelier at the Liverpool Architecture school. These 3rd year students are designing Material Institutes under the wider agenda of Productive Cities.
The schemes explore various material cultures both laterally and literally through the proposed buildings’ treatment, as well as through the programmatic functions.
The workshop was dedicated specifically to building façade prototypes. Following my preceding introductory talk on MS Teams, most students arrived with pre-prepared model bases and frames, which streamlined the workshop start in allowing the participants to get straight into the tectonic exploration. For many schemes, it was the prototypes that suggested their own scale as they were being progressed through intuitive experimentation.
