N16, Olympic Village, London

In 2021 – 2022 I was part of the TP Bennett team working on a 504-room student accommodation block in Stratford, East London, one one of the sites formerly developed for the Olympic Games 2012. Our team was appointed by Get Living with the University of the Arts London being a secondary client on the project, since the building would be partially designated for their students.

The project provided me with a detailed insight into how the accommodation can be divided, when a university is formally involved in a project. As shown in the section to the right, the rooms in blue are designated to the University of Arts students, whereas the rooms in green are for private lets. At ground floor, the scheme accommodates 450 m2 of community space & 200m2 of commercial units, along with cycle storage and a landscaped courtyard.

The design was stringently overseen by LLDC – London Legacy Development Corporation. Our team went into several pre-apps, making updates to facades with every iteration. In the finalised proposal, another design firm, Glenn Howells was also involved. Within our team I worked with a director and two further colleagues assisted us. As the scheme was being submitted for planning in 2023, I moved onto other projects.

All images are from our team’s finalised Design and Access statement, submitted to the London Borough of Newham for planning in 2023.
