LARAC Conference / Re-use hub

At the end of autumn 2021 I visited the Re-use hub to visit the informal conference LARAC 2021. The re-use hub is based at the site of a a former In Vessel Composting facility in Trafford park (in vessel composting proved to create toxic and unpleasant sites and it’s facilities have been repurposed).

Some of the speakers were particularly memorable. CIWM president Adam Read gave a talk highlighting the importance of the emerging soft and IT skills for waste managers. A DEFRA representative introduced the decision making processes behind the emerging DRS & EPR policies. Resource Futures presented the challenges posed by the multitude of different soft plastics currently on the market and the potential new facilities that may be required to process these.

During the breaks I got a chance to make contacts at the GMCA / Suez, as well as to see the vast quantities or furniture, sports equipment and electronics salvaged from public tip sites and upcycled at the Hub. It was also of interest to see the interior design showrooms built using salvaged furniture and decorations.
