Visit to Longley Lane MRF in Manchester

In November 2021 I went to visit Longley Lane MRF, the site for sorting Greater Manchester’s recyclable waste. Langley Lane, built in 2010 and operated by Suez, is the largest facility in GM region, taking material from all districts, other than Wigan.

Compared to other MRFs, the waste stream here may appear ‘dirtier’. This is due to paper not forming part of the waste stream. The principles of this MRF operation are typical to the other facilities of its kind: the material is loaded onto conveyor belt and subsequently split into fractions using magnets, eddy currents, optical separators, glass crushers, manual sorting, and other methods and technologies. The useful fractions are sold to recycling companies, whereas the residual waste is sent to Runcorn EfW in Cheshire.
