Circular Economy Workshop with Buro Happold

Designing ‘waste space’ needs to change as does the way we think of all waste and recycling as a
whole. Often based on outdated British Standards or prescriptive BREEAM and LEED, the current
practices increasingly diverge from the present needs to minimise both waste generation and resource consumption.
With office waste and recycling costing upwards of £20bn annually, overloaded municipal facilities, and plastic in our waterways, the design experts from tp bennett were brought alongside Buro Happold’s circular economy specialists with the following aims:

  • To examine current practices, problems and opportunities across the residential, student
living and office sectors, from individual units to full masterplans
  • To understand the benefits the circular economy can present to landlords, end-users,
    communities and the environment
  • To evaluate how architects and waste consultants can work more collaboratively in order to
raise clients’ awareness and interest in effective waste management
  • To assess the prospect of producing an updated best practice guidance for all stakeholders

I was a part of the organising team for this workshop which took place on 20 February 2020.
