Unravelling San Roque: results

After conducing visit 1 and visit 2 to San Roque market, my students condensed their findings in an ethnographic exhibition.

The workshop revealed some inquiries into patterns and activities within the market. Students chose to focus on

problems (due to poor municipal management market space is often distributed unfairly and with navigation difficulties)

opportunities (trader association arranging their own infrastructure, electrics, building elements and storage facilities in improvised low-tech ways)

social issues: identifying daily activities and necessities of a particular individual involved in the market.

The study, as well as previous work by Al Borde architects, revealed the true demise of the market extending beyond its purpose-built physical form into the surrounding streets. Following the workshop I took part in a discussion about the market problems/future with UISEK’s dean Nestor Llorca, his students and Al Borde’s David Barragán.

Below: example studies of opportunity/special problem/social focus by Amanda Ponce, Daniel Muñez and Nicole Tarira.
