Ocean surges, floods and other under-studied dangers for Lekki

Lekki Peninsula is a barrier island in a location where the Atlantic’s waves and currents are particularly strong and consistent in their direction. Due to consistent dominant wind from the south-west, the waves come from this direction and ‘re-bound’ at a right angle towards south-east, taking the coastal sand with them.

Dr Jerry’s PhD looked at the effect of the coastal erosion on Lekki’s coastal settlements as some of the existing estates are already in danger of destruction by the powerful ocean. Mr Obiefuna also modelled a a possible occasion of a 4m high ocean surge which would cover with water two strategic locations at each side of the peninsula, flooding several settlements, blocking the Express-way road and trapping all of the peninsula’s residents, potentially causing many deaths.

Dr Jerry and I reviewed the possible implications on my design project, from sewage treatment to disaster management. He recommended me the relevant literature and precedents and also suggested a possible design project site by the ocean, which would permit me to address Lekki’s often overlooked flooding problems, as well as to relate to the water feature as most other high standard Lagos-based hotels.
