Banana Island

Some people say land on Banana Island is the most expensive in Nigeria, others say that in the whole of Africa. The level of perceived security here is definitely one of the highest amongst other locations in Lagos I have experienced. In the 1980s the new area to-be-reclaimed was  envisaged as the high rise Lagoon City , however today it ended up as a mixture of individual housing and 6-12 floor mixed buildings, with a high population of expatriates residing and working here.

In order to join my friends working in one of the buildings on BI, I had to go through four security checkpoints:

  • first gate coming from Ikoyi area
  • second gate (where one turns either towards banana’s end or where it would join a tree) immediately after the check-in area  (a parking lot with a security man going around to take visitors’ details)
  • entrance into individual compound where the office building is located
  • at the ground floor of the building before entering the lift
