Last Thursday I visited a 56-acre estate named Prаcht Garden (south of the Expressway in Ikota region) with proposed 40 or so plots dedicated to identical 4 or 5 bedroom houses. The gated estate is to have security patrol, its own supermarket and playground. Here I observed some principles for services and infrastructure layout for a new development.
Images further down illustrate the ecological issue with building on Lekki. Large parts of the peninsula are prone to flooding and retaining water close to the surface. Once an area is built up (such as an estate) and its ground is partially sealed, the water finds it way and appears in a different location to create a more severe flood plane. Given the amount of ongoing and proposed construction, one could speculate that the future urbanised Lekki will be made up of wealthier well-drained and sealed areas and surrounding poorer parts susceptible to high amount of floods and stagnant water, bringing various health risks and deteriorating roads. To explore this issue further I am hoping to meet with the specialist on Lekki’s water and flood issues Dr Jerry Obiefuna from UniLag.
