Having been thouroughly checked by the security at intimidating gates I have been admitted to the women’s territory. A large compound plot in Lekki Phase 1 is shared between Lagoon girls’ primary and secondary schools and the hospitality Institute offering two year courses for women, particularly from low-income backgrounds. Being ran by an NGO, the institute is a light, quiet (unusually for Lagos) spacious series of theoretical and practical classrooms, library, chapel and living quarters. Girls between 17 and 21 (currently 33 students) with ambitions for a hospitality career learn about food & beverage, housekeeping and hotel management during their two year courses. I have agreed with the school administration to return in order to see the building ‘in action’ when the classes resume next week.
